How does PC Outreach obtain computers?    Our computers are donated by individuals, schools and businesses.  Generally, these are Pentium level PCs that have out-lived their usefulness with their original owner and are scheduled to be recycled or discarded.  A donated computer is rehabilitated as needed in our state-of-the-art facility (actually it's a basement in Exeter).  If needed, essential parts and/or software are added (also paid for by donations).

How does PC Outreach distribute computers?    PC Outreach computers are only donated based on referrals from designated entities.  By this means we can assure that our computers go to homes where they are truly needed.  There is no direct distribution of PC Outreach computers to end users.

Does PC Outreach charge a purchase price or other fees to the families and/or individuals to whom it provides computers?    No.  There is no charge to the recipients for a PC Outreach computer, and we make every effort to reduce or find underwriters for related costs such as Internet access.  The whole idea of PC Outreach is to get a functional computer with a full complement of software and Internet access into the hands of people who otherwise would not have a computer in their home without any substantial cost to the end user.  Should the user wish to add software or accessories or upgrade various components at their expense, that is their right as the machine is theirs to keep.

Can a contributor receive a tax write-off for donations of funds or computers to PC Outreach?    No.  PC Outreach is not a corporation, and thus cannot offer tax deductability.  To date, however, that has not been an obstacle to either individuals or companies wishing to support the PC Outreach project, however, as the most common alternative to donating computers to PC Outreach is either surplus storage or paid disposal.

How are PC Outreach computers serviced?    PC Outreach relies on Internet-based technical support and an automated voice mail system for support.  There is no tech support staff at PC Outreach, just the founder and whomever else may volunteer.

Is the data removed from hard drives on computers donated to PC Outreach before the computer is redistributed?    Yes.  Even if a computer is donated to PC Outreach in perfect working order, all hard drives are repartitioned and reformatted to destroy whatever data may have existed on the hard drives from their previous owner.
